Garages & Outbuildings
A new or remodeled garage or outbuilding may be the answer if when extra workshop space, a place to house your hobbies, or just a place in which to hide out in is needed. There are many market choices for garages, barns, cabins and sheds. They can be a do-it-yourself projects for the experienced hobbyist, but tackling a project of this magnitude can be full of pitfalls and heartbreaks. We came across this funny anecdotal “sage advice” from “Instructables: How to build a garage from the ground up.” As the author so strikingly reminds us, “The key component of Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith's favorite saying, "I love it when a plan comes together!" IS the plan. Take that to heart and you will spare yourself a lot of trouble when building a garage.” After reading all about “doing-it-yourself,” call us quick before you change your mind and jump right in mindlessly. We think you’ll be glad you did. Still feeling brave?
Follow these helpful guidelines:
- Communication with the building permit office is important.
- Communication with your neighbors is helpful.
- Take the time to know the city rules.
- Take measurements of your lot.
- Draw up your site plan on your computer; it's easier than moving foundations later.
- Make sure your plan meets your budget.
- Get your plan approved by the city.
- Get your permit.
- All this must be done before you begin.
- Don't forget proper inspections as the work progresses.
Garages, sheds, casitas, carports and other outbuildings can be steel, portable or prefabricated, kits or built from scratch to match your home’s façade. Whichever way is chosen, the proper foundations and installation will protect your investment and enhance property value. Even some huge play-sets or gazebos may need to comply with building and property codes. Do your homework to decide which way works for you.
